Hello! Well, the very exciting and historic 3Y0X EME operation is rapidly approaching! Just a reminder - please check the 3Y0X.xls link at the bottom of this email once they begin to get moon, to make sure that the operating frequencies have not changed, and also to see updates on their EME operation. Also, remember that you are welcome to call them in the random calling frequency window ANY TIME YOU ARE COPYING THEM. Please do NOT call them blindly if you are not copying them (unless you are running a sked with them on the sked XMIT frequency). When I first contacted K4UEE and K4SV years ago about incorporating some EME activity inyo one of their trips, I certainly had no idea it would evolve into such a huge operation! The credit for this multiband EME effort is due to the interest of all the team members, but one individual clearly stands out. Gordon, W0RUN, has almost single-handedly assembled the pieces to construct EME stations on three bands, get them working, make contacts off the moon with them, and then crate up each station for shipment to the frozen south. Although there will obviously be other team members contributing to the successful EME operation down at 3Y0X, Gordon is the primary motivating force behind making this all happen. Some of you have asked me, "Who is this mysterious W0RUN anyway?", so I wanted to pass along a greeting and update from Gordon himself before he takes off next week: ************************************************************************************************* "de W0RUN: The 3Y0X Megadxpedition to Peter 1 Island is totally on-track, including the EME (moonbounce) stations. All equipment is on the ship, and the operators are in the final packing stages for departure. When I offered to take over responsibility for this part of the expedition, I had never made an EME QSO. I appealed (via email) to the amateur community at large, and got a number of responses. Equipment was offered, and suggestions. Lance, W7GJ, offered to be "EME pilot station". Within 3 weeks, I had made a QSO on 6m, with the help of many folks, notably K6MYC, Mike. Eventually stations were assembled and tested for 2m and 70cm as well. Building 3 moonbounce stations in less than 3 months would not have been possible without the incredible support given by a host of people, too numerous to thank individually here. You know who you are. On behalf of the whole team, thank you. Now we are about to commence the operations phase. I am almost as nervous as I was in 1967 when I received my first call, ZE1DC, and was about to tap out that first tentative "CQ". I am excited, but also concerned about doing a "professional" "amateur" job. I hope I can rely on your understanding if things do not allow us to come "out of the blocks" at full speed. I have received assurances from the rest of the team that EME will get an honest try, so please bear with us. Lance has almost a more difficult job than I have. He is the focal point for ALL eme-related email, voicemail, whatever. Please realize that he will have only one or two shots to talk to me via satphone every 24 hours. We think we have enough equipment to be QRV on three band s simultaneously, but this is not the configuration I tested here in Boulder (I worked the stations one at a time, dis-assembling the previous one). It is possible when we get down there that one or another contingency will constrain our operations one some of the bands. Please be understanding if your favorite band is affected. If YOU are QRV on multiple bands, I think it would be good if you could get all your gear ready, just in case. I can only say that when I offered to go to Peter 1, moonbounce was not even mentioned. Now, it is (in some ways) the most important reason for me to go through all this. I promise that I will put out every effort to get every one of you "in the log". 73 CU on the big yellow thing in the sky." ************************************************************************************* GL to everyone, and let's keep our fingers crossed for good weather down south! There are more digital EME DXpeditions coming up in the very near future, so if you are interested in working small DXpedition stations, this is your chance to get in on the fun!
